Here’s today’s Frequently Asked Question, submitted via Email! Feel free to comment and let us know what your favorite eye shadow base is!
Hi Chica,

In an effort to enhance and prevent creasing in the color of my shadows, I have experimented with both Painterly and Urban Decay Primer Potion. While the primer potion works, I don’t like the container it comes in so I opened it up to get the few remains. When that happened it dried out in 24 hrs. I bought Painterly over the weekend and its not creamy and leaves this ashy residue. Are there any other primers you can suggest?

I’m having issues with my shadows being ashy-looking and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Should I move to pigments with a mixing medium or should I try more matte shadows?

Any suggestion would be great!

Scandalous Beauty: Well, let me first say that since I have used MAC Painterly Paint Pot for years and it’s the only base that has consistently worked for me. It can dry out quick, so it’s best to use it sealed at tight as possible and store upside down. (One of my Youtube views taught me that!) Urban Decay Primer Potion is a cult favorite that has never worked for me, so I completely understand.

But, what works for some might not work for all, and I respect that! I’ve heard quite a bit about Too Faced Shadow Insurance. Apparently, It’s Urban Decay Primer Potion’s only real competition. I’ve never tried it. An inexpensive-ish base that works well if you’re going to stick to frosty eye shadows, try the L’Oreal HIP Cream Crayons. They literally don’t come off. Seriously! They come in over 5 colors, but the shade “Meticulous” is a nude beige that works as a good natural color. You’ll need a good makeup remover to get it off. I hope this helps!

I’ve tried urban decay and too faced shadow insurance. I’m not a big fan if UD i only get it when it comes free in a shadow pallete. Shadow insurance on the other hand is the best it’s goes on and dries very smooth a creamy so shadow glides on top with no flaking.

A good test of primer is to go in the store slater a bunch on and let it dry. How it dries is a good indication of how it will look if it dries ashy and flakey thats a good indication of what it will do under your shadow

I would also suggest NYX jumbo pencils. I have 7 of them and I LOVE them. I do use UDPP and use this over top.

I would have to say too faced shadow insurance is great. I find it creamier than Urban decay primer potion and the packaging is way better.

So I have not used the painterly but I have used both the UDPP and shadow insurance. Shadow insurance is not my favorite but it works. It dries slower and is more creamy, so if you don’t have a formulated plan or particular look this one will probably work for you since it does not dry as quckly. The UDPP dries very fast. You need to have a plan when you use this otherwise you may need to start over. It is a liter bit harder to blend once it has dried. My favorite primer so far is the Laura Mercier eye brites. They come in various shades and stay on all day. I haven’t tried the HIP but i am going to go and buy some right now!

Hello there! I agree with all thus far but please note, what may work for you may not work for others and vice versa. Having said that, my favorite top 3 would be:

    1. Too Faced Shadow Insurance – it’s smooth, creamy, easy to
    blend shadows ($17 or more)

    2. Coastal Scents Eye Poxy Primer – very light, smooth and creamy
and definitely gives Too Faced a run for its $$. ($10)

    3. UDPP – a bit thicker in consistency, eyeshadows don’t crease
however packaging sucks! ($17 or more)

I can’t forget about the variety of paint pots and shadesticks. Keep trying til’ you find one that works best for YOU!

I love Too Faced Shadow Insurance, I feel the color pops more than with UDPP.

I use the MAC paint pot on “Quite Natural,’ and I LOVE it!

Thanks Erin for posting my question. I appreciate all the feedback and will start experimenting on the suggested buys! Long live the beauty divas!

Too faced shadow insurance is the BEST shadow primer I’ve ever used. The packaging is great, and it does what it says it’s going to do. Stop my shadow from creasing. And this is coming from a girl with terribly oily lids. I’ve tried them all, and too faced is the best.

I hear about UDPP a lot but I’ve never tried it. I love paint pots and Shade Sticks. Maybe Painterly wasn’t the color for you, just don’t give up on the paint pots. My favorite is Indianwood. I also like Rubenesque. Painterly is good but it does dry out a bit faster than some of the other colors that aren’t so matte. The Shadesticks are even better because their water proof unlike the paint pots that are just water resistant. Another alternative might be a Cream Color Base. These are creamier than the paints, paint pots, and shade sticks.

    Good luck with your search!
