Wearing Weaves For Hair Growth

It seems like every other woman (of any race) is walking out of their home with a weave in.  This could be a full weave, half, or a few pieces here and there.  Many women wear them for style reasons, they like to have a different look often or don’t want to damage their real hair.  And there is a slight few who wear weaves for the single purpose of growing out their hair. The idea is to let the hair rest and grow with the lowest amount of manipulation.  It’s insane how daily combing, finger playing, and product over-usage can retard the process. Overall, I think this is an excellent strategy.

For instance, check out one of the best weave stylists that I’ve ever seen, Reniece.  She’s a Maryland based stylist that has people buzzing. This woman is so in demand that she rarely takes new clients.  I met her a few years ago, as I was a candidate for a Healthy Hair Makeover.  My hair was natural, dry, full of color and driving me crazy. Because the excessive hair coloring, it was best that I not weave my hair, for fear that I’d have too much breakage. I was very disappointed, but very happy that she didn’t withhold her opinion just to make some extra money.

While researching this idea, I was dumbfounded at the results of her clients! They come in every so often for maintenance and analysis of how the progression is coming along.  Here’s a before and after page, including clients that have used Reniece’s (and her sister Breon, also a master weaver) talents to get their hair to grow. The video below is the end result of the stylist’s own progress. GORGEOUS hair. And the kicker is…she’s 100% natural. I had NO idea. You can see her progress here in her photo album. If you have any questions about weaves, brands and products to try, etc., Reniece has a detailed FAQ section that is sure to help you out!

Did wearing a weave help your hair grow??

Hey! To my knowledge, only Reniece and her sister work in the salon doing weaves, so you should definitely email her first to inquire about her services and availability( hair@reniece.com) . There are long spans of time where she isn’t accepting new clients. I hope she can hook you up! :-)

yes! i had kinky twists for a month and a half, took them out and my fro is luscious. I thank the kinky twists for keeping my fingers out of my hair and letting it do its thing haha

I'm a little conflicted about that video and the message it sends. On the one hand I am glad that she is a stylist who emphasizes hair care over just styling/weaving, she serves as a wonderful example to her clientele that their hair will not only LOOK great but it'll be healthy. I also know she is natural and who obviously takes good care of her hair. But the whole long, flowing, silky running her hands through it just rubbed me the wrong way. I know not everyone cares to wear kinky hair but I feel like we have a hard enough time trying to make natural KINKY/CURLY hair the acceptable(?? for lack of a better word) and vids like this just set us WAAY back. IDK, Im just conflicted on this one ;-/

After my I took out my first weave, I made the mistake of not combing out my hair afterwards. Huge mistake as I'm sure you can imagine. So if my hair did grow in the short time that I had it in, I wouldn't know because I was too busy cutting out the knots in my hair.

I wore a weave for about a year and a half. (2008-early 2010) I started with hair at my jaw line. After a year and a half my hair reached my shoulders. I only did sew-ins. I would wash my hair regularly. I wore my weave every two months. After two months, I would take out it out, perm it and then go for another two months. I grew tired of it and stopped. I was amazed by the length I attained after a year and a half. I've been wearing my own hair out since late Feb of this year. I'm now focused on maintaining health. However, I did notice a decrease in the thickness in my hair after my weave period. That's the only negative I received.

when i went to get my hair re-done, i couldnt beliege how long my hair has gotten since ive been getting it weaved…its longer than its ever been! ive always had short hair, despite coming from a mother that has always had particularly long hair; now, my hair is only 3 inches away from her length. I still wear the weaves because they’re versatile and low maintenance…but my hair has grown past its normal length, and I am more than pleased
