Next week, The Independent Fashion Bloggers and Lucky Magazine will be holding premiere conference for fashion bloggers. It’s New York Fashion Week, a holiday to fashionistas worldwide. Here are some things you’ll need if you’re attending.
1. Business Cards
This is a prime networking opportunity. You never know who knows who or who works wear. If you do spark conversation, don’t leave without passing along a business card! Make sure it includes essentials like your website name, address, social media usernames, your name (optional), email address, etc. You can also get fancy and use a QR code or V-card.
2. Laptop/Tablet/Cell
This decision is up to you. I’m sure most of us wouldn’t dare walk to the corner of the street without a cell, and I’m sure it will happen here too. I’m a huge fan of live tweeting/live blogging, and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing. Make sure everything is fully charged, as there’s a lot of information to take in. I’ll have my laptop for quick typing. When it dies, I’ll move to the Ipad [I'm slow as hell on that thing].
3. Notebook
As much as I love technology, I can’t live without a good ole 18th century pen and pad. Writing is still vital. When batteries die and you can’t fish through your tote for your cell, pull out the paper.
4. A Fabulous Outfit
You’ll be in the presence of the fashion world. Look like you give a damn. First impressions are everything, and who knows how many new relationships you will make that day. Plus, who knows what fashion blog or magazine you could be featured in!
5. Camera
I like to generally use my phone’s camera for quick pics, but I don’t take chances here. I’ll be bringing my Canon DSLR.
How to Be There Without Being There
This sucks. I totally understand. You have class. You have work. You didn’t have the funds. It sold out. I’ve lived every one of those scenarios. This is my first time actually being in the building for one of these conferences. But I’ve never missed one. Ever. Here’s how you can be there too:
1. Live Stream
Both conferences generally have a live video stream as the conference is happening. I watch the entire thing and take notes. Chill in your pajamas, make a martini, whatever you choose. I’ve also set up my laptop to record the entire thing using Quicktime (not all versions do this.)
2. Twitter
Following the conferences provided hashtags will allow you to score tweets from people. You can also follow the speakers of the event.
3. Youtube
You can still find videos from many of these conferences via good ole’ Youtube. On demand entertainment.
4. Blog Roundups
Many of the bloggers in attendance will end up sharing their experiences on their blogs. Again, follow the hashtags and check for links.
Also, always remember, Google is your friend. Search for what you want to find! Of course, all of these tips are a great idea for any conference/workshop that you may be attending. Have an amazing time and I hope your blogs reap awesome benefits!
