Erin’s Style Chronicles: The REAL Beginning of My New Wardrobe (Plus Big Butts–A Gift and a Curse?)

Erin's Style Books

I Have No Clothes.

It’s true. I’ve stepped out of my “working in the relaxed lab” to corporate America. I went into my closet and looked at my inventory.  Even so, I own 2 pairs of jeans that have no holes, bleach marks, or rips on the bottom. At the end of the day, I hate feeling like I have nothing to wear when I really do have nothing to wear. I’m also trying to figure out the line between “my pants are too tight” and “this is my butt, I’m going to embrace it”.

I love to look good, but I really hate shopping. I don’t get excited to try clothes on, but I read fashion blogs every day! As you can see, I posted pictures of most of my fashion books. Maybe I like clothes more than I thought.

Rihanna, I Love and Hate Your (New) Style, All At the Same Time

rihanna-grammy-awards-2012-03

Rihanna hit SO many high notes with this outfit last night. I mean look at her! The dress was inspired by one of my favorite movie characters, Elvira Hancock from Baltimore. I will never get enough of Scarface. While she was an avid drug user, her firm stance and no-mess personality won me over. I wanted her to end up with Tony Montana just as much as he did.

Anyway.

She barely had on any fabric. Her cleavage was out, her back was out, her legs were out. The dress barely had any components to it–and she worked it. The thin chains by Jacquie Aiche wrapped around her body were perfection. It was that hint of jewelry that accents the look. Everything about them is very Rihanna. The makeup was simple, bronzy, and minimal. I loved it. She oozed sexy. And I didn’t notice any of that at first, because I couldn’t get over her hair.

Rihanna. Come on girl.

I know that she likes to mix it up every few months. She gradually adds length or drastically cuts it, or changes color. She doesn’t like to be predictable. I get it, and I respect it. But damnit, this hair is the absolute worst on her, in my opinion. I’m not going to say I’m the biggest Rihanna fan, I don’t own any of her music, I don’t need to watch her perform. But I always know she’s going to bring it on the red carpet. But that 80′s chic roots-ablaze-tousled-teased-split-end-looking mess? I just can’t get into it.

Former Essence Editor Mikki Taylor Debuts New Book Today– Commander in Chic: Every Woman’s Guide to Managing her Style Like a First Lady

Mikki Taylor Commander in Chic on Kindle for Ipad

It’s a great day in the world of fashion! Style Connoisseur Mikki Taylor’s new book, Commander in Chic: Every Woman’s Guide to Managing her Style Like a First Lady, debuts today! Her book release party was held at Tracy Reese, and looked even more fab than we could have imagined. Soledad O’Brien was there along with fellow bloggers and editors. I was stuck in Maryland, in class. Grr. Take a look at the party pics here and here.

Commander in Chic: Every Woman’s Guide to Managing her Style Like a First Lady is about to be my new fashion guide. I am a firm follower of Mikki Taylor. Whatever she says is golden to me. I’m crazy excited about this book because my wardrobe is full of clothes that don’t and pieces that I’ve had that no longer fit my style. I’m into dresses and skirts along with loads and loads of prints. I don’t own many of any of these. Can’t wait to hit the purchase button and add it to my collection of fashion books! I’ll be purchasing on Kindle for Ipad, pictured above.

I Love This Look: Jennifer Lopez Kohl’s Collection Ankle Boots and Cut Turtleneck Sweater Dress

Jennifer Lopez Kohl’s Collection Booties and Cut Turtleneck Sweater Dress
Jennifer Lopez has teamed up with Kohl’s to bring a new, fresh line to the retailer. She’s pictured here in the Cut Turtleneck Sweaterdress ($70) and Ankle Boots ($99.99) during an appearance in Connecticut. Both items are on sale right now! Had I not known that this was part of her collection, I would have thought is was one of her typical $4,000 outfits.

Erin’s Outfit of The Day: African Print Tube Dress

Dress: Cynthia Rowley via Gilt, Blazer: BCBG, Wedges: Steve Madden

I never really do fashion posts, because I don’t own enough clothes! I wore this to a work event, the Oyin Handmade “Your Hair is Awesome” bash. This was the ensemble I had chosen to wear for the IFB Conference earlier this week, but rain didn’t go well with this outfit. Justin, aka Metropolitan Boy, aka my stylist, told me to wear this today. I love it!

I Love This Look: Solange Knowles at Gilt City Event

Solange at Gilt City

Solange Gilt City

If there are three things I love, it’s eye-popping bold prints, a red lip and Solange! Here’s a picture of the gutsy Knowles at the GILT CITY Jade Jagger Fashion Week Soiree this Saturday. This lip reminds me a lot of the MAC Post Paradise lipstick that I posted earlier today.

Next week, The Independent Fashion Bloggers and Lucky Magazine will be holding premiere conference for fashion bloggers. It’s New York Fashion Week, a holiday to fashionistas worldwide. Here are some things you’ll need if you’re attending.

1. Business Cards
This is a prime networking opportunity.  You never know who knows who or who works wear. If you do spark conversation, don’t leave without passing along a business card! Make sure it includes essentials like your website name, address, social media usernames, your name (optional), email address, etc. You can also get fancy and use a QR code or V-card.
