LISTEN: Jill Scott’s New Collab w/ Robert Glasper “Calls” Our Name

I discovered Robert Glasper a few weeks before the debut of his last album, Black Radio. I still have Lalah Hathaway’s cover of “Cherish The Day” on repeat. Jilly from Philly has teamed up with Jazz musician Robert Glasper for his new CD, Black Music Vol 2. When you hear combinations like this, you don’t have to hear the track to know it’s a hit. Tonight, I got my first listen–and there was no way I could keep it to myself. Everything about the arrangement sounds like Robert Glasper, but the track takes you back to the “Who Is Jill Scott” period. Remember that soulful, pour your heart out in the coolest way era? I miss it–but I can get a great dose with this track. Black Radio Vol. 2 is available October 29, 2013. Be ready.

Gilt, You Have The Sexiest Packaging Ever + My New Sexy Dress!

My Gilt Package

Yep, this is the inside of the box.

The outside cardboard is a typical bland mailer. But as you slice the tape away to reveal your purchased gem…I gasped. I was in complete awe when I opened it. Kind of like I found a golden ticket. Branding, for the win!

Gilt is by far my favorite sample sale site. You get amazing outfits for deep discounts. They have the widest array of clothes, decor, and now food!!! I’d never made a purchase on Gilt before, but checked the site everyday. I got a notification last week that they would have “tribal” print as a feature on Sunday night. You all know I’m slightly obsessed with African Prints [here are some of my favorites], so this was right up my alley. So far up my alley, in fact, that I set the alarm on my phone to alert me when the sale started. I used the Ipad app to jump on at 9pm, but I was a few minutes late–my dream dress [the Marc by Marc Jacobs dress below on the left] was snatched away from me! I’ll find it somehow.

Anywho, the dress that I ended up getting [pictured above, in the middle] is a Cynthia Rowley strapless dress with a bubble skirt. I love it! Love with a capital L! : )

Brooklyn, NY- Jazz by Jose James, Unity, and The Most Amazing Natural Hair I’ve Ever Seen

I took a day trip to Brooklyn with Meagan Shea yesterday. Weeksville Heritage Center was hosting its free concert series [Meshell Ndegeocello and Keziah Jones will be there in the upcoming weeks], and my favorite jazz vocalist performed. Meagan knew how much I loved his music, so it was a no brainer that I attend!   Jose James’ music was introduced to me in 2009, and I was hooked that very night.  My friend Emeka shared some of his favorite artists, and he told me he thought I’d really like Jose.  Yep, he hit the nail right on the head. He’s got a deep bass-y voice that keeps you in a trance. My favorite instrument sound is the trumpet, so I captured this piece of Jose singing, plus a solo from his trumpet player.

I assumed that I’d see some pretty creative hair, since no one seems to give a f— in NYC. Everyone marches to the beat of their own drum, and they don’t let the latest mainstream music videos or Vogue decide what’s dope. Everyone was comfortable in their skin, and there was a happiness that I can’t really describe. No two styles were the same, and all were unique to the owner.  I wish I had my Canon and not this simple Droid camera!

Music to Move To: Sergio Mendes, Magalenha

The “Dance With Me” soundtrack is one of my all-time faves. I love every freakin’ track. The music is infectious, Chayenne is delicious, and I can’t even speak a lick of Spanish. This very movie had me going to salsa clubs and lusting over Dominican men. I bought the soundtrack back in ’98, and wore it out so bad that it skips all the way through. They have some used cd’s available on Amazon for $3, so I guess it’s my time to partake!

You have got to watch these people dance! This is real talent folks. These video girls now days just strip and grind. THIS is what a music video should look like! Please take note of how amazeballs Vanessa L. Williams looks in this video. Her body is redic! I loved her makeup too, so over the top, perfect for a performance. #mustworkharder

Just thought I’d share. Off to study!
