Makeup for Absolute Beginners: Start here!

Have you always wanted to wear makeup but you have no idea where to begin? No worries, welcome to Scandalous Beauty.

Makeup is something that really has no start or finish. There is no right or wrong way to try products. You can live the rest of your life wearing only mascara and it’s fine. You can just wear just lipgloss and that’s okay too. It could take a few minutes to a few months to get your dream look. Just remember, practice makes perfect!

In my opinion, if you’ve never used makeup before, I suggest starting with mascara, powder and lipgloss.

I’m going to jump out there and say that mascara would be the first makeup item that I would recommend. It’s just a little coating to go over your eyelashes, but it makes all the difference. One coat gives you natural lashes, 2-3 goes a little more glam. Mascara on your bottom lashes also makes a world of a difference! You can wear just this, and it would be all you needed.

I started my mascara journey with Maybelline Full N’ Soft.  I did this mainly because I went to a school that didn’t allow us to wear makeup.  This mascara gave me just enough of what I needed. It’s still a top mascara for a reason! If you want glam eyes, this is not the one for you. Over the years, I’ve fell in love with quite a few magical versions, including  MAC Zoomlash, Chanel Imitable, Flirt! Lash-A-Delic. Another outstanding bet is L’Oreal Voluminous.  It gives thick, sexy lashes for a drugstore price. Everyone from real women to top celebrity makeup artists swear by it!

I recommend powder because it’s a great way to fake having a “complete” face. It will take away any shine that you might have. Please listen: if you have dry skin, stay away! This is going to make your face look drier, ashier, and wrong. I’ve heard the greatest things about Cover Girl Queen and Iman Cosmetics pressed powder. I used MAC Studio Fix powder for years.  It’s a powder and foundation all in one.  People either love it or hate it,  so I suggest you try it at a store or counter first. Powder foundations can give more coverage than the typical pressed powder.  It’s just something you have to experiment with. I currently use a loose powder by Ben Nye, the shade is Banana. I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners however.  We’ll just leave that alone for now.

A little shine never hurt anyone! Be it Wet ‘N Wild or YSL, gloss adds the perfect finishing touch. There isn’t enough time in the day to rundown the best glosses out there.  If you want the best bang for your buck, Milani Crystal Gloss {Whisper, Innocence} and L’Oreal HIP Shine Struck Liquid Lipcolor {Reserved, Arresting}are my go to choices. If you want to shell out some money, Becca Cosmetics {Flirtini, Bellini, Caipiroska}, Stila {Brown Sugar, Praline, Vanilla} and MAC {Mad Cap, Viva Glam V, Pinkarat Lusterglass} are winners!

Becca Cosmetics Compact Concealer

Becca has a more extensive range of foundations and concealers than I have seen on the retail market.  During the Hautelook sale, I purchased “Hazelnut”. You can purchase this on the website ($38).  I didn’t really know if I would be able to use this color, I hadn’t tested it on myself.  Because the shade is so specific, it makes it a little confusing.  But on the other hand, when the color is right, you know it’s dead on!  When I opened the package, I thought it looked pretty consistent with my MAC NC50 foundation.  Well…

The image above shows that they are no where near the same color.  It’s funny, the NC50 actually appears fairly red.  When I applied it to the lighter parts of my face, my skin didn’t look any lighter or darker.  It just look right.  Don’t expect that concealer to make your skin look dewy, or matte.  It continues to make you look like your have better skin in an effortless way.

Lip of The Day: Pink and Perky!

The pink lip! I can’t deny that it’s one of my favorites. Here’s a tame lip look that will look divine on all skin tones, from the lightest to the darkest! This week, I’m relying on my MAC Pro lipmix again. These are so great to have. You can smudge them in with your finger to create a stain, plus they’ve got tons of pigment. I’m sure I’ll have every color soon!

Let me tell you why I purchase glosses from Becca. They aren’t sticky, they last for a good while, there’s no taste and the colors aren’t found in every other company’s inventory. After you try your first one, you’ll see why.

I took a very spur of the moment trip to NYC this weekend. It may have been a dumb decision, since my first student loan payments are due in a few weeks. ($500+, if you are in high school or college, do whatever you have to do to get grants and scholarships! You’ll be thankful in the years to come!) Oh well. You only live once.

I go to NYC every other month or so, and I never want to look like a tourist. I never take pics of the things you see on tv, because I’m getting used to seeing them. But this time, I figured I would look like all of the random people walking around at a glacial pace with huge paparrazi cameras around their necks. There are many of you who have never been to NYC! So, at my expense, take a look at my (hopeful) future home, NYC.

Puerto Rican Day Parade! It hadn’t started yet in this picture, but people were lining up. It was really inspirational to see a group of people so proud of their heritage.

Are you a sophisticated lady? Well, Chanel has some ideas of just what will keep you smiling during the hot Summer months!!! Click the image to see a larger view.

Inside the infamous Magnolia Bakery. This one was outside of Rockefeller Center. I love the location in the Village most.

I walked past these dresses at Saks on 5th Ave (the real Saks Fifth Ave!!!) 4 or 5 times, just to admire them. I took pictures, because they were breathtaking.

Oscar De La Renta

The Angel Sanchez above? Wow. It was stunning. If I have an evening wedding, locs in a high, neat bun, and wanted a sultry, sexy look, I’d have to have this dress. No doubt about it. My makeup would be a clean face with a deep crimson lip. *squeal*

Back View of the Vera Wang
This Vera Wang was my all time favorite! I’ve always dreamed of a strapless wedding gown, either sleek and simple or large and robust. When I saw the Wang garment, I screamed. That was my only reaction. It was SO beautiful. Click the image to see a larger version. Be careful, your heart may skip a beat!!!

There’s so much more to come, be on the lookout!! I’m working on a Natural Hair FAQ video, as well as a dedication to Make Up For Ever and Becca, plus I’m continuing my celebrity makeup tutorial series! The fun never ends at Scandalous Beauty!!!

Must See Videos of The Week!

My recreation of the Kim Kardashian Maxim Hot 100 Look. I used MAC Golden Olive Pigment, Velvet Moss (discontinued, of course) and Humid Eye shadows, amongst many other products. I found the look on Kim’s Blog. She’s always got the hottest makeup, it’s loud, sometimes obnoxious, but ALWAYS on point. Makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic created the look and gives each detail on him blog.

AJ Crimson is giving away the entire collection of Kissable Couture! All you have to do is send him a video via e-mail (or as a video response) telling him which Kissable Couture gloss is your fave! He’s also got a brand new free shipping code when you enter “justforyou” during checkout. Hope you didn’t miss the last sale!

Do others discourage you on your Natural Hair Journey? I get many e-mails and messages saying that friends and family sometimes have negative comments to about their natural hair. Trust me, I know. I’ve definitely been there. It happened to me all over again when I decided to loc my hair. I’ll be doing videos on Shrinkage, the Big Chop and Using Heat on your hair soon! Check back at for new videos!

Marsha at Brownface TV does a very in depth show at The Makeup Show NYC. She highlights brands including Becca, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, and Three Custom Color. You’ll get to meet several bloggers as well. Seriously, I felt like I was at The Makeup Show all over again! I always love Marsha’s videos, she gets the greatest coverage at the hottest beauty events!
